SEE TEFL – October 2016 18 October, 2016

Dear friends of SEE TEFL,

We hope this twice-yearly email finds you well. Most folks will have heard the news about the King of Thailand. On Thursday, 13 October, 2016 he passed away at the age of 88. This ushers in a profound period of mourning for Thailand, and we wish to express our heartfelt condolences. We have a page on our website regarding what to expect in Thailand during this time of mourning.

The Chiang Mai municipal Loy Krathong / Yi Peng celebration (14-16 November) will not include fireworks or live outdoor music. It is expected that people will still launch krathong and lanterns, but some of the government-organized events (beauty contest, fireworks) have been cancelled at this time. Private activities will continue as normal.

4 Week TEFL Grads and Interns

We now have 1,100 graduates from 92 four-week TEFL courses, and another 69 grads from 7 teacher training and paid internship programs. Currently we estimate that we conduct about 20% of the TEFL/TESOL/CELTA courses in Chiang Mai and award about 30% of the 120-hour TEFL/TESOL/CELTA Certificates.

These last few weeks have been the busiest, and we are grateful for our new purpose-built school, which has more room, and our trainees appreciate.

Upcoming TEFL Course Dates

Here are the remaining 4 Week TEFL courses for 2016, and the first three months of 2017.

  • 06 March – 31 March, 2017

Featured Restaurant in the Neighborhood

Shouvik is a great source of insight into the neighborhood around SEE TEFL. One recommendation for lunch is a small, old style Thai diner which is just across the street and one or two shophouses to the East (toward the Ping river). This place is called Leung Derm or Uncle Derm’s, and has many of the popular made-to-order dishes for lunch. The one pictured below is khao ka moo or braised pork knuckle over rice. A lovely elderly couple prepare these dishes, which are reasonably priced at around $ 1 USD. Don’t miss it.

TQUK Center Certification

On 06 July, 2016, SEE TEFL and its operating company DSS International Language Services Co., Ltd. were awarded official Training Qualifications UK Centre certification #1709305. This certification is assurance and endorsement of SEE TEFL courses and course quality management by TQUK. In turn, TQUK is recognized by the UK Government Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) as an accrediting and awarding organization. TQUK Endorsement helps prospective TEFL teachers make a wise decision between TEFL courses. Such certification and endorsement requires on-site visits and a comprehensive review of the course and quality management programs in operation.

Well, that’s it for this time. Cheers!

Sincerely,

John Quinn, Director and Senior Trainer
